This webinar, as part of a NANS-APP series, will discuss issues in patient and device selection for procedures done in functional neurosurgery practices. Panelists will highlight the challenges that mental health entail when considering treatment with neuromodulation. In particular, chronic pain is well recognized to be a multidimensional issue with sensory, affective and cognitive components, and such factors influence treatment outcomes with spinal cord stimulation. In addition, recent advances in deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders have demonstrated improvements in overall functioning and well-being. Please join our experienced team of advanced practice providers and physicians in this topical discussion.

At the conclusion of this educational presentation, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify patient characteristics and co-morbid mental health conditions that predict long-term outcomes following spinal cord stimulation
  2. Describe coping strategies for patients with chronic pain, and the impact of pain on mental health
  3. Describe the indications and evidence for the use of deep brain stimulation in the treatment of psychiatric disorders
