North American Neuromodulation Society

About NANS

The North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS), formerly the American Neuromodulation Society (ANS), was formed in 1994 through the efforts of physicians dedicated to patient care through the field of neuromodulation. The society is a chapter of the International Neuromodulation Society (INS). NANS is a non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of the field of neuromodulation within the United States. NANS is devoted to the pursuit of excellence in the application of all neuromodulation therapies. Neuromodulation is often defined as the application of targeted electrical, chemical and biological technologies to the nervous system in order to improve function and quality of life.

We are actively involved in the following areas:

  • Develop standards of education for implanters through an education continuum designed to educate at all levels of involvement in neuromodulation.
  • Modify, at the national level, procedures related to neuromodulation. Through the work of Samuel J. Hassenbusch, MD PhD, NANS and other related organizations have been successful in increasing the relative value units for implantation, drug refills, and stimulator programming and also in more clearly identifying coding issues for implanters providing updated billing and CPT code avenues.
  • Support the journal, Neuromodulation, through article submission and member recruitment. The Journal has been a tremendous addition aiding our ability to create the awareness required to provide for public knowledge, the important research carried on by members as well as others interested in the field. As a NANS member, members receive a subscription to the journal as well as an automatic membership in the INS.
  • Commitment to the development of quality techniques and devices leading neuromodulation into the 21st century through the Research and Technology committee. Discussions are underway to develop a network connecting established clinics in research related activity in a vendor neutral fashion. This blends well with our commitment to develop and foster methods of measuring outcome in relevant ways and to provide this information to the public.

With our current membership of more than 1800 members, we now represent the most active implanters in the field. The majority of these members are working in pain related disciplines. NANS membership currently consists of practitioners from anesthesiology, neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine & rehabilitation, basic science, and electrical engineering, to name just a few. We actively pursue members working in other neuromodulation areas such as epilepsy, urinary incontinence, angina, and movement disorders. In addition, taking the lead of the INS, we are opening forums for presenting the work of our colleagues who deal with functional electrical stimulation for patients with quadriplegia and paraplegia or paralysis due to brain injury and stroke.

As can be seen through the above information, the North American Neuromodulation Society is a vital and growing organization positioned to continue advancing the field of neuromodulation in the 21st century.

The success of the North American Neuromodulation Society is dependent on your input and ideas. We want to know what you think, want, and need from us. Your ideas are actively solicited.

Our History

In 1994 Barry Strauss and Ballard Wright, two anesthesiologist pain specialists contacted Medtronic and the Neuromed Corporation for assistance with formation of what they called the Neuraxial Pain Society. Learn more about our history here.
